Executive Board Members 

President, ​Deborah Garrett, CPS, CPRM-M

Deborah is a person in long-term recovery, which for her means she has not used alcohol or other drugs since November of 2001. Deborah holds a Master's Degree in Non-Profit Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology. She is certified as a Prevention Specialist and as a Peer Recovery mentor through the Michigan Credentialing Board of Addiction Professionals.

Her work experience includes delivering inpatient clinical services, the professional development of recovery coaches in Michigan and three years as Director of Recovery Communication with R.E.A.L MI (Recovery, Education, Advocacy, and Leadership) a recovery community organization based in Detroit where she provided oversight to a SAMHSA Recovery Community Services Program grant focused on developing a statewide network of recovery community organizations and professional development of peer recovery service providers.

She is the recipient of the Spirit of Recovery Award presented by The Michigan Association of Substance Abuse Coordinating Agencies, has been voted one of Michigan Alcohol Policy’s People of the Year, and a proud recipient of The Myron Whals Recovery is Possible Award presented by the NCADD-GDA.

VICE PRESIDENT, DARNELL JENNINGS II

​Darnell is an avid spokesperson for people whom suffer from mental health ailments, substance use disorders, and cognitive impairments. He is a humble native Detroiter who joined NAADAC to help serve those that share the passion of serving society.  Darnell currently works as an behavioral health advocate, resource director, and business development professional for mental health and substance abuse treatment within the state of Michigan. “I wanted to see a positive change happen in the area that I grew up in; which has been plagued with addiction, poor mental and behavioral health resources, and despair. This has inspired me to work as a public servant to help bridge the gap between those who provide wellness services, and those who need social services and resources”. Darnell received his higher education from Wayne State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Masters of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Public Administration.  Darnell is an avid nature lover who enjoys reading, helping others, and enjoying all that life has to offer.

RONNIE TYSON

Ronnie Tyson, LMSW, CAADC, CCS-D is Director of Outpatient Services @ Flint Odyssey House and Clinical Supervisor @ Wellness Aids Services Inc. My administrative and clinical roles have increased my awareness how policy makers use structural factors motivate organizational behavior and create sober, safe, and healthy living environments. I have worked in the field of social services since 1990 and become conscious how policy design impacts my professional practice. I have developed an understanding how organizations are required to respond to policy and funding shifts which is really about directing organizational and practitioner behavior.

TERRANCE NEWTON

​Terry Newton has served the field of substance use disorders since 1978; beginning at a Veteran’s program called “Prodigal House” in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prodigal House was founded in 1973, primarily for Vietnam Veterans who were coming back to the United States addicted to heroin. In Terry’s vast career, he has guided clients at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Hazelden’s Fellowship Club in St. Paul, Minnesota; Adolescent Half-Way Houses “Shanti House” and “Way-12” in Minneapolis and The Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California. For 23 plus years, Terry successfully served Harbor Hall as its Executive Director. He presently serves Emmet County on the
advisory committee of the Northern Michigan Regional Entity dealing with substance abuse disorders, and serves on the board of the Michigan Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors

In his free time Terry enjoys an active role in the Rotary Club of Petoskey, He has been married to his lovely bride Elizabeth since 1986 and has fun spoiling many nieces and nephews. He is very passionate living Rotary’s motto of; “Service above Self.”
